Dock No. 5 is referred to as an "outgoing dock" because the 100-acre operation focuses primarily on receiving material by either rail or truck, stockpiling, and loading vessels for shipment to a variety of customers - products ranging from bentonite clay and chrome ore to sinter feed, blast furnace trim, mill scale, and iron concentrate. A Hallett-owned rail yard allows them to do their own switching, plus a state-of-the-art rail car unloading system and material handling equipment efficiently transfer products from rail car to dock face. Along with transloading, this dock also has covered dry storage with a capacity of 20,000 tons for commodities such as salt and fertilizers.
