Harbor Corrosion Study

Since 2004, the Duluth Seaway Port Authority has supported collaborative research efforts that have been looking for factors contributing to accelerated steel corrosion in the Duluth-Superior harbor as well as options for remediating/replacing infrastructure along some 14 miles of steel dock and pier structures. Currently there are construction projects ongoing at eight of the port's cargo terminals - replacing or placing protective plating around existing sheet pilings to eliminate the risk of further corrosion while maintaining and significantly enhancing structural capabilities for decades to come.
